Press Crew January 26, 2015 Less than a year ago, the only same-sex marriage petitions that were being considered by the Supreme Court were from Tennessee, Louisiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. Now, the United States consists of 36 states that have approved same sex marriage, including Florida.
On January 1, Judge Hinkle confirmed his marriage ruling clarifying that all Florida counties are bound by the U.S. Constitution to start issuing same-sex marriage licenses starting on January 6. While this change for Florida seems sudden, it was not approved without difficulty. A conservative group tried stopping county clerks from helping same-sex couples get married the week the law got passed. The Florida Family Action Inc. filed two lawsuits December 30, asking a judge to prevent the officials from either officiating or issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples beginning the new year. Groups such as the Florida Family Policy Council continues to fight against the legality of same-sex marriage in Florida. The president of the organization claims that they have a long term plan on rebuilding the culture of marriage in Florida. This group is filing lawsuits in counties across the state as county clerks prepare to issue licenses. Despite all the set back Florida’s law for banning same-sex marriage was finally lifted on January 6. |
