A Year in Review: 2014By Erica Kok
News Editor January 26, 2015 As another year comes to a close, let us look back at all the things that 2014 has brought upon us. This has indeed been another year that will be a part of our history.
For some, this might have been the best year they’ve ever had, while for others, this might have been one of the worst. Whether you’re wishing for 2014 all over again or you’d rather move on and forget about it, no one can deny the multitude of lessons that 2014 has taught us. This was a year of change, a year of hope, a year of learning, a year of joy, a year of sorrow and another year in history. Before we move on to 2015 and to greater things, let us first go back to remember and reevaluate all that 2014 has brought upon us. Here are some of the year’s highlights that none of us will forget anytime soon: Selfie From the Oscars to our phones, the selfie of an A-list huddle crashed Twitter in 2014, a photo that everyone with internet access had to have seen, ultimately became the most retweeted picture in history. According to Google, searches for ‘how to take a better selfie’ and ‘guy selfie tips’ also increased up to eight times this year, as compared to the ‘what is a selfie’ searches in 2013. Let It Go… Goes Platinum While Frozen was first released in 2013, last year it officially earned the title as Disney’s biggest hit in more than a decade. The movie broke records, and the theme song “Let It Go” was played over and over again on the radios, TV and social media, driving parents from all around the world crazy. The Ice Bucket Challenge Who could forget the trending challenge that everyone wanted to be a part of? From A-list celebrities to government politicians, the world came together to support a common cause: raising money and awareness for ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. For a while, you could not go on Facebook without seeing a video of someone on their backyard holding a bucket of ice. The campaign raised more than $17 million in the end. Fun Fact: According to Facebook, George W. Bush had the most-watched video for this challenge. Ebola Ah, the disease that sent the world panicking for their lives. Ebola was also on Google’s most searched words for 2014. It seems like this virus suddenly popped out of nowhere, causing mass hysteria among citizens of the world. Travel security to and from Africa was tightened, and you could not watch the news without hearing about an update on this dreadful disease. Then, just as it had come, it also suddenly faded away. What did happen this pandemic? Missing Planes 2014 was also the year that planes began dropping off the radar, causing fear and doubt to a number of travelers. Who knows where all these missing planes went? This year has indeed been a memorable one. Filled with joy and sorrow, 2014 is now a permanent part of who we are today. |
