Swish! And the DeLand Bulldogs score another basket. That phrase will be heard a lot more now that basketball season is underway.
The Bulldogs season tipped off Nov. 17, as they faced off against the New Smyrna Barracudas. The Bulldogs showed much improvement during the game as they gelled well together. Sophomore Brodgie Gordon led scorers’ with12 points as the Bulldogs cruised to a 58-46 victory.
Led by second year coach Sebastian Singletary, the Bulldogs have gotten off to a great start by showing they mean business by winning game one. Last year after Singletary took over for Bulldog coaching legend John Zeoli, the Bulldogs had a rough season posting a losing record.
Since the season tipped off the Bulldogs have gotten off to a hot start posting a 2-2 record, notching wins of New Smyrna Cudas and the Mainland Bucs with one loss to the Father Lopz Green Wave, and another loss to the Spruce Creek Hawks. Although they showed they know how to protect their house they are undefeated on Coach Z’s Court.
It’s early buts it’s clear that last years disappointing season left a bitter taste in the boys’ mouths. When asked about last season performance senior guard Ryan Kasebeer said, “ I was very unsatisfied with the performance of our team last year. That’s why I made it my goal to do anything in my power not to have a repeat of last year.”
Senior Camus Desforges weighed in with his thoughts he said that he felt disappointed but he was encouraged because he knew for a fact that him and his teammates were gone to be motivated to make a comeback.
After the season the boys were excited to get back to work for the coming season, Desforges said “ the offseason work last summer was very challenging, we traveled all over the state to play against the best high school athletes. If we didn’t it would be a repeat of last season.”
Kasebeer shared his thoughts by saying it was tougher than last year but he liked it because to beat the best you have to out work the rest.
Kasebeer and Desforges both gave their thoughts on the season so far by saying that the season has started of good, it’s already better than last season, also that’s it’s clear that all the work they put in during the offseason period was already translating in games.
The Varsity Bulldogs are back in action Monday, December 14 against Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs. The Bulldogs look to continue their hot season, and try to be one of the county’s hottest basketball programs.
