Missed Calls in The NFLBy Jimari Troupe
Press Crew October 19, 2015 Missed calls in the NFL have become a big problem as of late, ever since the Fail Mary the refs seem to never get the call right.
It all started during the 2012 NFL season, during the big referee hold out, replacement refs were hired from across the USA; some were high school refs even some was from the little league level. It was a Monday night football game in the closing moments. The Seattle Seahawks were driving down the field against the Green Bay Packers, the Seahawks were down and it came down to the final play a Hail Mary. Russell Wilson rolled out and threw it up to his wide receiver Golden Tate him and Green Bays Tim Jennings both went up for the ball. At first it looked like a clear interception by Jennings but Tate came up with the ball after wrestling for it. The replacement refs talked with each other after two refs disagreed on whether touchdown or interception and they sent it up to booth review and it was ruled a touchdown and thus the Fail Mary was born. Ever since then missed calls have been a habit whether it was a simple holding or off sides call to game changing calls. This was a case again on Monday night football once again in Seattle, this time it was the Detroit Lions driving down the field. There was a little over a minute left on the clock and the Lions were running out of options. Matthew Stafford dropped back to throw a small slant pattern the his wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Johnson caught the ball and did a lot with it he got to the goal line before Seattles safety Kam Chancellor knocked the ball loose into the end zone where KJ Wright obviously batted it out of bounds. Again the refs talked for a bit and ruled it a touchback Seattle wins, afterwards a head retired referee said it was against the rules to bat a ball out of bounds in the end zone so it should’ve been Detriots ball on the 1 yard line. Ultimately the refs missed two game altering calls in the same stadium in the same exact end zone as before. Missed calls have to come to an end. It’s affecting many games lately and upsetting a lot of fans. |
