Raising Self-EsteemBy Shania Strickland
Press Crew October 19, 2015 About 20% of teens will experience depression before they reach adulthood. One of the main causes is low self-esteem.
Self-esteem is made up of thoughts, feelings and opinions we have about ourselves. It is a thinking disorder in which an individual views him/herself as inadequate, unlovable and incompetent. It can change the way you feel about yourself. If you want to feel better about yourself, try to focus on what goes well for you. Find something you are good at and think positively about it. Aim for effort rather than perfection. Some hold back because they think they have to be perfect. This is the main reason why kids have low self-esteem, but if we stop trying to be perfect we will feel better about our own accomplishments and ourselves. Also try to remind yourself that everyone excels at different things. We do not have to try and be like everybody else. We all have our own personalities and abilities, and set goals and accept compliments. When people say you look nice say thank you and keep that compliment. Do not try to bring yourself down even more. Having low self-esteem is not uncommon in teenagers. We all try to please others and make other people happy, but the one person you have to make happy is yourself. You have to love yourself first. Nobody should take that away from you. All you have to do is keep your head up and enjoy life. It is a special gift. |
