Sorting Out Dual Enrollment

There is one catch, however: you still have to be in high school, too. The Dual Enrollment program is one of the unique opportunities that DeLand High provides for its students, giving pupils a chance to experience college level courses without the cost. Although it may seem as if the upcoming spring semester is still many, many weeks away, the preparations and registration for spring semester courses are going on right now, and if you don’t act fast, you may find yourself scrambling to fill your schedule up. Registration for Daytona State College courses started on November 2 and will run through the end of the year. Classes are first come first serve so it is best to be prepared and strive for registering as soon as possible. As a Dual Enrolled student, enrolling in these new classes will take a little bit of extra time because you have to go through more steps in order to be enrolled. These steps include getting your guidance counselor to sign off on the classes you are requesting to take at the college, fitting these classes around your high school schedule, and turning your schedule into your guidance counselor once registration is completed. When you Dual Enroll, instead of having a seven class schedule, you will now have a six class schedule with at least one class on the high school campus. This means you can take anywhere from one to five classes on the Daytona State campus or online. While college offers more subjects to take, it is important to note that some of the courses offered require you to take another class beforehand. Taking classes such as ENC1101, which is Introduction to Composition, the lowest level English class available, or Intermediate Algebra which would be called MAT1033, in your first semester would make the rest of your semester course decisions a lot less limited. It is also required of Dual Enrolled students that they take the Managing Your Success course which is offered on the high school campus, college campus, and online. It can be a bit overwhelming when registering for courses and getting to choose your own professors. You never know what you’re going to get when it comes to strangers and you may have many questions as to how they run their classroom, their personality, and their style of teaching. Fear not my fellow students, there are many websites out there that assist students in making these tough decisions, the most notable of these being ratemyprofessor.com. Here you can find reviews of professors from their former students. The website rates professors on a five-star scale and even ranks them based on their five-star ratings, all you need to do is type in the college’s name. Taking advantage of the opportunity to possibly graduate high school with an Associate’s Degree is a very smart decision. However, it is a decision that requires dedication, motivation, and preparation. Register for Spring, ASAP! |
