Flag Football Season has ArrivedBy Leah Rando
Staff Reporter March 10, 2017 Flag football season is here and it’s bigger and better than ever. Teams were announced and the practices have begun.
Three years ago, there were barely enough girls trying out to have a team. Almost every girl made it and as the coach of the varsity team, Chris Dowdell said, “We had to scrounge up girls just so we had enough for one team.” Over the past few years though, the DeLand flag football team has had a drastic change in the number of girls trying out. From scrounging up players to cutting 25 qualified girls in only a few years. With the sport becoming more and more popular, our flag football team will only get better. This year at tryouts it was an amazing turnout. Fifty-five girls tried out and only fifteen made each team. It was extremely hard to make and Dowdell stressed how important it is to have a spot on this team, because there is always someone willing to take it. The JV list is: Keara Akines, Erykah Baker, Tori Contois, Antonia Cortes, Ashley Cunningham, Madeline Fedigan, Sa’mia Gibson, Angelica Gonzalez, April Hunt, Arial Kennedy, Jannie Larsen, Macy Mullen, Maritza Ruiz, Jermirria Williamson and Cassidy Yule. The varsity team is: Alissia Alvarez, Alison Baker, Mckenzie Bostic, Emily Flores, Bruines Gonzalez, Gabrielle Maikisch, Summer McDonald, Skylar Minsky, Jaelynn Murphy, Leah Rando, Christina Rees, Sarah Roelants, Isabella Smith, Amber Sylvia and Jada Young. The talent on both teams is impeccable and every girl who has a spot on the team deserves it. The first game is away at New Smyrna at 5:00PM on March 24th. Like the back of the jerseys say, “If you aren’t runnin’ with us, run from us.” |
