What in the Helen, Georgia?
By Nyn Ruckman
Staff Reporter December 20, 2017 For the uninformed folks, Helen, Georgia, is a small town in Northern Georgia up near the Appalachian Mountains. Helen consists of several nature trails, mountains, state parks and a cute German themed town. I recently had the opportunity to visit Helen and to explore all of its opportunities for a tourist during Christmas time and I was not let down.
Let’s start off with the mountains you’ll see. I highly recommend, if possible, lodging in a cabin or house up in the mountains, so you are more likely to see snow fresh in the morning when you wake up and so you can enjoy the scenic drive down the mountain when you take trips into town. If you’re a Floridian, like myself, you’ll more than likely be blown away by all the flora and fauna surrounding you and by the fact that it’s no eighty degrees out. Pegged throughout the mountains are tons of nature trails and state parks to visit. One I visited was Anna Ruby Falls, which consisted of a short .4-mile hike on a guided trail to a breathtaking waterfall that formed in the tops of the mountains. This site happened to be a part of the Appalachian Trail and was not only a great site of Mother Nature but also a beautiful photo opportunity. There is also a large assortment of state parks to venture through. Most state parks are pet friendly, so you can bring along your pups for some exercise or an early morning walk. Many of the parks were short drives just outside of Helen and had great views of mountains from afar and walking paths. If you’re going to Helen but aren’t a big nature enthusiast you won’t be disappointed by the town area. All aspects are authentic replications of German restaurants and shops and during Christmas time is strung with lights and decorations everywhere. Most restaurants feature German cuisine like schnitzel or hot pretzels and are as authentic as it comes. The town also features several candy shops, tourist stops and old German themed antique stores. A family vacation or getaway to Helen, Georgia, will not leave you disappointed. There are several activities to keep you and even accompanying family and friends busy, but at the same time having tons of fun. If you’re down for stream tubing, fudge eating or mountain hiking, Helen is the place for you. |
