The How And Why Of Media Marketing
By Brittany Donohoo
Staff Reporter December 20, 2017 Every time you click on a website, you experience advertisements as well as pop ups. You can choose to exit them but they’re a part of something much bigger than a momentary inconvenience.
The first media platforms were actually BBSes, short for the Bulletin Board Systems. These were places where users could download files or games and post messages to other users. In the 1990s, BBSes started featuring advertisements, paving the way for our modern media marketing. As of 2016, 90% of companies regularly utilized social media as a part of their wider marcoms strategy. Marcom is a common abbreviation for “marketing communications” and is targeted interaction with customers using social media. Urban dictionary defines media as “the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, that reach or influence people widely.” This can be applied to everyday life. Pretty much any business or corporation, small or large, that you can think of, utilizes media platforms. You see small town business advertisements in the paper and large-scale corporation advertisements online. Sometimes, though, what you think is an advertisement is actually a pop up advertisement. They sound similar but are obtusely different. Pop up ads can appear in their own separate window, often from legitimate businesses, though occasionally are scams and a part of malicious software. They’re seen as dangerous and 95% of Yahoo users say they absolutely hate them. Quite different, advertisements appear within the web pages you visit and even though they are annoying, they aren't dangerous. By placing advertisements on the web, businesses increase their search engine rating by 58%, have higher conversation rates and see improved customer satisfaction. When consumers have more direct access to producers, they are happier and talk about the companies more, causing more people to go to said producer. Regardless of users, media marketing is beneficial to businesses of all kinds because it widens their audience and allows them to seen. With a simple Google search, one would see 35 million entries of businesses in South Dakota thanks to advertisements alone. So instead of seeing pop up ads and ads as annoying, just remember that they’re there to increase business and widen the marketplace. |
