Sam Smith made quite the entrance this year in the Grammys. The British soul singer has won over a crowd of people with his incredible voice and his first album, In the Lonely Hour. He himself never thought that his album would make it big whatsoever, but it earned him four Grammys.
Smith was rewarded for being the only solo artist to sell more than a million albums both in the UK and US in 2014. Not only did he take home record and song of the year, he earned a Grammy for Best New Artist. Although a couple others like Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé and Beck took home their share, the night belonged to Sam Smith.
Smith rose to fame in October 2012, when he was featured in the single “Latch” which was number eleven on the UK single charts. He also featured in “La La La” by Naughty Boys, which got him recognized as well.
When he released his first album in May 2014, most of his songs hit the charts. “Stay with me”, “I’m Not the Only One” and “Lay Me Down” are just a few catchy hits that were very much liked by the public. Through his success Smith has been very open about his personal life. It is now known that his album was based on a guy and that he struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder. He recently told Ellen DeGeneres that he wants to be honest with his fans and the world in general.
He celebrates his success in the Grammy Awards with “I would like to thank the man that this album is about. By breaking my heart, you won me four Grammys!”
