Prospecting the prospectsBy Jimari Troupe
Press Crew March 3, 2015 The prospects of the 2015 draft are a step closer to achieving their dream now that the annual draft combine is in the books.
The prospects are back at their own respective colleges by now as the last combine work out finished up Feb.23. The four day camp that is held in Indianapolis, Indiana, had a lot of big storylines going in. One big story line was who would be the first quarterback taken, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers holds the first overall pick. Analysts all over the U.S. who cover the NFL thinks it’s going to be Jamies Winston out of Florida State despite off field problems. Going into the draft the idea was Winston had the physical advantage over his competition to go number 1 overall in Marcus Mariota but it turns out is they have the same physical attributes i.e. height hand length and weight accept Winston outweighs Marcus by only eight pounds. When it came up to the testing Mariota outshined Winston in the 40 yard dash and the high jump. Lovie Smith, the Buccaneer head coach will be watching these two very closely to see which one he would like quarterbacking his team next season, as these two hold their own individual pro day later on next month. Another big storyline was that this might be the year that a running back will be taken in the first round. In the past drafts the running back has been an undervalued position but this year two standout performers have made their case as first round talent. Those two running backs are Wisconsin university running back Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley from the University of Georgia. This past college football season Gordon was a Heisman finalist and won the Doak Walker award that signifies him as the top running back in college football. Gurley, on the other hand, has proven himself to be just a freak of nature as he decapitated defenses with his running style, but two season ending injuries have set him back behind Gordon. These two will continue to make a case for the first round as April rolls around. With the NFL Draft Combine in the books it’s on to individual pro days that are held at the prospects respective university. As the draft is set to take place on April 30 through May 2. |
