O Liberland, Our Home And Native Land!
By Clay Hamric
News March 9, 2018 Among other geopolitical events, a new country by the name of Liberland is being formed. Despite being labeled a joke by most neighboring countries, the founders are not stepping down.
The Free Republic of Liberland is a 2.7 square mile parcel of land between Croatia and Serbia. It was first proclaimed a few years ago by Czech politician Vít Jedlička. According to Jedlička, the goal of the country is to create, in short, a libertarian utopia. The proposed constitution for the country speaks heavily of individual rights and in many ways echoes the beliefs of our Founding Fathers. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the country is that all forms of currency will be accepted. Even more interesting is that they plan on making their official currency a cryptocurrency. However, the country has garnered little support. Currently the United Nations does not recognize Liberland as a real country. In fact, the only other country recognizing Liberland is Somaliland. The Republic of Somaliland is also not recognized by the U.N. Croatia, who claims to own the land, has had to stop Liberlandian citizens from entering several times. Access to the country has apparently been difficult, as noted by its current population of zero. According to sources, Liberland is currently a forest with one abandoned shack. Still, Jedlička promotes his country in an absolutely serious manner. You can apply for citizenship on Liberland’s official website. The citizenship application includes everything a normal application would include, and simply filling it out does not guarantee citizenship. Hundreds of thousands have applied, and only a fraction have been granted citizenship. Liberland has actually received one true endorsement so far. Former libertarian congressman Ron Paul was granted full citizenship last month. Despite the slow and rocky start, the country of Liberland is continuing to grow in one way or another. It, like many other micronations, may some day end up as sovereign as the United States. |
