Is It Vegetarianism Or Just Saving The World?
By Leah Rando
Staff Reporter December 19, 2017 Vegetarianism doesn’t just save the animals and your unhealthy eating habits, it actually helps the world go round.
The benefits that are include with this lifestyle involve us not overheating the planet. Humans eat over 230 tons of meat per year. Eating all of these animals per year need large amounts of food and water, emit methane and other greenhouse gases as well as produce insane amounts of physical waste. These sorts of gases are released from belching and farting cattle from the different foods they’re given. The amounts of energy used to kill all of these cattle and gases used to schlep their bodies across the country is causing extreme harm to the planet. A quick change to also how much water these animals are consuming compared to how much fruits/ vegetables consume. A pound of potatoes takes anywhere from 60-220 pounds of water, while a pound of beef takes up to 9,000 liters. Mass production of killing animals can even cause deforestation as well is polluting the earth. Six million acres a year are grazed by cows for their eating, causing us to need more and more space for these animals and our excessive need to breed them and feed their families before killing. Something has to feed your food, which is causing major deforestation. This can begin ruining our air, by living anywhere near factory farms and seeing the mass amounts of smoke as well as smelling the greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide. Livestock alone are responsible for 37% of pesticide usage. So of course being vegetarian has its health benefits, but it’s even better for the world. |
