Weebly Editor March 9, 2018 One of DeLand High School's two teams scored third place at the Regional Science Olympiad tournament held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Feb. 17, a first for the school's self-started science club.
Science Olympiad is a national competition that takes teams of up to 15 students across the country who compete against each other on the regional, state and national levels in 23 different events. These students work as partners on a wide range of activities; from designing and building contraptions, to researching and studying the varying field of science, to practicing teambuilding and communication skills with each other. This year, the regional tournament had a total of 15 teams from schools such as Deltona High School, Spruce Creek High School, Atlantic High School and others, with two teams from DeLand competing because of the significant amount of students willing to compete. Because of the preparation and practice of the 20 students who participated, as well as the several others who could not make it, DeLand High has qualified for the Florida State Science Olympiad Tournament for the first time in the three years that it has participated in the regional events. In addition to these firsts, the third-place team scored first-place in five individual events, which ranged from building balsa wood structures to practicing organic chemistry and coding. Across both teams, three second-place and three third-place awards were also scored. Now, the team must prepare for the upcoming State competition, which could have over 40 of the best teams from public and private schools alike, even including science academies. Club sponsor Mr. Tate says that the team will keep practicing the various build events and keep on research as they have been, meeting almost every day of the week, even on Saturdays. |
