Brockhampton In The Spotlight
By Olivia Honan
Staff Reporter March 9, 2018 2017 brought a lot more to the music world, new artists experimenting with new sounds and one up and coming band that suddenly began to gain notoriety, Brockhampton.
Brockhampton is an unconventional boyband that consists of fifteen male members. They stray from the mainstream idea of what a boyband is supposed to be, mostly in genre. They focus mainly on rap and hip-hop rather than the upbeat pop of most boybands. Though one of the first questions people ask about Brockhampton is how could they have fifteen members? Although they consider the band to consist of fifteen, most of them are involved in the production process, and only four of the men, Ian Simpson, Ameer Vann, Matt Champion and Merlyn Wood, consistently provide vocals for each track. Their sound varies from song to song, songs of theirs like "BOOGIE" feature an upbeat fast-paced beat, while other songs like "FACE" are slow bass-heavy ballads. Taking influence from artists like Tyler the Creator, Kid Cudi, Kanye West and several others, they constantly mix styles and tones resulting in a unique sound for every song. One thing Brockhampton is well-known for is their Saturation Trilogy in which they wrote and produced three full-length albums in one year. Considering that most artists will take a year to create one album, making three in that same span of time caused people to begin to take notice of the band. Their goal in this was to 'saturate' the music market with something they felt was new and that they were passionate about. Brockhampton introduces a new perspective and sound to all of their listeners and they aren't afraid to delve into sensitive subject matters. In the past, they've mentioned topics such as sexuality, racism, women's rights, pasts in drug dealing and relationships with their family |
